Sports team preparation for player auction: IPL mega auction 2022

It is most important and hard to find out right team combination for any sports league. There is always dynamic situation at auction table and strategy needs to be looked after each player auction. This is very big task when there are a greater number of teams. Each fan eagerly waits for auction day and predicts players to be part of his favorite team. This is also very important when there will not be such kind of big auction in next foreseeable future. So, each team needs to create their best team looking at long future in mind. However, teams will get chance in future to trade players between teams and small auctions. But that will only serve minor short-term requirements. Full mega auction is highly crucial to build team.

Every team works as per their own way. But there are few points common for all teams which they consider while selection of player auction strategy. Following are some points:

1. Deciding core idea of a team

Every team wants best team utilizing optimized resources. So why core idea of a team is important? Before answering to this question, let’s understand about core idea of a team.

A team management decides together before mega auction and as first step to prepare for mega auction about core idea. This core will be different for all teams. For example, one team may decide all batsman from India and key bowlers from foreign or some may target only all-rounders or some may prepare complete young squad or some may go for right mix of experience and youth or some may go for 4-5 best star players and others are uncapped. Ideas are plenty but it should be decided in first place.

Core idea of a team is very important. For example, CSK and MI are most successful IPL teams and they did not change their core idea like captainship, team combination, player roles. It is one of the reasons for their success in IPL.

2. Decide target players and divide them as per priority

After deciding core idea of team, next step is to decide on players which can be part of team. This step is to shorten down funnel from ‘all available’ to ‘all required’ players.

Then decision is to be taken for priority of players. Some players are required for making playing team and some players are required for back ups for main team. Some players are required as reserved which can be mentored and prepared for future.

For example, let’s say teams can divide all players in A, B, C categories. Players in A category will constitute main playing team. Players in B category will constitute back ups for category A players and Players in C category will be uncapped young scouted players.

3. Decide possible auctioned price range for each player

Every player in auction has his base price. From this base price, team starts auction process. Team decides performance of players in their selected categories (A, B, C). Also, it is good to predict about number of teams targeting individual player. Based on the same, each player is given possible auctioned price range within their categories A, B, C.

4. Decide auction purse value among categories of players

Each team has its remaining purse for auction. Teams need to play within their purse range. So, after deciding target players in various categories with possible auctioned price range, purse amount is to be divided between A, B, C categories. Based on this data, team management can understand how far they can go in auction to get one player. This will create auction price cut off for each and every player.

For example, each team in IPL has remaining purse after their retention and draft players finalization. Mumbai Indians has INR 42 Cr to spend. Out of which, they may decide ratio of spend as 50% in A category (INR 21 Cr), 40% in B category (INR 17 Cr) and 10% in C category (INR 4 Cr). This is just for an example. Each team decides its own strategies.

5. Real time auction simulations

Auction is very dynamic and each situation needs quick decision to make. So as last step before auction, team needs to simulate real auction experience among team members and try to find out observations, experiences. Also, teams can check past auction proceedings and learn from those experiences.

Above steps are basic steps and each step needs lot of brain storming, data gathering. It is also difficult to pick and choose from large pool of players. After so much preparation, nobody can confirm surely about actual proceedings at auction.

Building Successful Sports League – Important factors with Volleyball League India example

Second edition of Volleyball league is going to start at Hyderabad from February 5th, 2022. This is young league in India and coming again after 2 years of interval. Sports league helps engaging new fans to sports, attracting new players, motivating kids to play sports, creation and maintenance of sports infrastructure and helping economy around the sports to prosper. It is full ecosystem building around sports and related activities.

First edition of Volleyball league created lot of buzz and there is enough evidence to support it. The first edition witnessed 14.3 million viewers sample on Sony Pictures Network (SPN) India. As mentioned by SPN Chief Revenue Officer, Volleyball is famous in South India however, it gained interest in other parts like Assam, West Bengal, Gujarat and Haryana. Another way to see popularity is to judge performance of fantasy game developed by popular platforms. Volleyball fantasy game built by MyTeam11 has seen consistent rise in daily users leading company to double prize pool during first edition.

However, starting a total new league in itself is very difficult process. It is more difficult when the league is in such sports having less interest compared to most popular categories. For example, In India, cricket is most popular sport so success of Indian Premier League for cricket gained extremely good momentum even unexpected results by far compared to expert opinions.

Following are few important points to take into consideration to start any sports league in any part of the world.

1. League Structure Stability

Main aim of any sports league is always long term and delivering annual growth to League founders and investors. League structure should be engaging, with viewership growth potential, with involvement of complete sports ecosystem including but not limited to viewers, sponsors, sports authority bodies, broadcasters, investors, players, sports infrastructure.

For example, Volleyball league in India started with short duration of 21 days, 18 matches and with just 6 teams. All teams play with each other on round robin basis and top 4 teams enter into semi-finals. This small structure is helpful for getting experience on various aspects of league operations and economy. It also helps in gauging fan interest. Inputs from this learning will help next season to improve more effectively.

2. League Financial Stability

Every league needs money to run the show. More money is needed if sport needs to be promoted extensively to generate fan base. Money required at various levels like starting a league, operational cost during league, marketing expenses at league start and in operation.

For example, Volleyball league in India set benchmark for any new league. They have followed format in which team owners are also stakeholders in the respective leagues. This gives financial stability to league.

3. Relation with local sports bodies

If league is started by sport body itself with private support, it is most desirable way of starting any league. Sport body is governing mechanism for specific sport in country or region. They manage sport related infrastructure, scheduling sport tours & games, spending on training and development of young talents, promoting sport within country and region. So, it is easy to schedule sport league and making it part of yearly sport calendar of sport body.

If league is completely started by private entities, it needs to collaborate with sports bodies such that they are also interested in overall proceedings. Otherwise, there will be issues and disputes related to sport calendar, not getting NOC (no objection certificate) for national team players, not getting good infrastructure for league.

For example, Volleyball league in India started by Baseline with support of Volleyball Federation of India but then they both went into disputes. Federation terminated 10-year contract with Baseline and dispute went into arbitration. Arbitration rule was given in favor of Baseline however, second edition is going to be complete private league. For long run of league, it is always advisable to get support of local sports governing bodies.

Other example of private league is Indian Cricket League which started separately without involvement of BCCI but it did not last long without support of BCCI which is apex body of cricket in India.

4. Fan Base

For any league, fans are important part. Fans Engagement is extremely crucial for long term brand viability of any sport or team or league.

Volleyball league in India started with six teams out of which four are from South India where Volleyball is most popular. In second season, one new team is added from South India to increase fan base. Matches are scheduled in South India venues like Kochi, Chennai and Hyderabad.

5. Competitiveness

It is also important for any league to prepare strong teams including combination of national and international players. If players are available, team formation will be very good and without any bias. People watch sports because of excitement and fun. If matches played are very close fought, viewership will rise.

6. Reputation

Governing of any sport league with transparency and with complete ethical behavior is important factor. This helps in gaining trust from investors, sponsors, players and fans in to the league. Strong rules for governing, proper financial auditing, transparent selection process for teams and player auctions are crucial for building reputation for the league. So, it requires experienced sports experts, professionals to run the league as complete business entity.

7. International Market

It is very important to have international sport audience in mind. Broadcasters are helping matches go live internationally. This helps in attracting good international players to play in the league and thus increase fan base.

For example, the global volleyball market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 4.5% during the forecast period, from 2021 to 2028 as per Industry Growth Insight. Volleyball is included in Olympics since 1964.

Volleyball is very popular in Brazil, United States, China, Japan and it is played by men and women. Field Volleyball and Beach Volleyball are different versions. The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) organizes international calendar for various Volleyball related competitions. It is estimated that over 300 million people are playing volleyball worldwide.

Sports franchise selection from owner perspective - Lucknow IPL team case

RPSG Group won bid for Lucknow franchise with whopping INR 7090 Cr (USD 950 Mn) in October-21. There are lot of happenings in last ten days of new year 2022 with Lucknow IPL team. They selected Gautam Gambhir as team mentor, former Zimbabwe cricketer Andy Flower as main coach and India cricket Vijay Dahiya as assistant coach. They have also started their official twitter handle seeking official franchise name from cricket fans.

When owner or investor selects a team during sports league auction and bid for the same, there are lot of important things going on to lead that decision. Afterall, there is lot of money at stake. These points for selection are same for all kind of sports with all kinds of leagues in any part of world.

1. Cost-Revenue model

First important point is Cost-Revenue model for franchise over stipulated time of operations. In simple language, it is estimating total costs and total revenue for next few years of operations.

Cost is including franchise license fee, team players and support staff salaries, operational cost including all logistics arrangements like travel, hotel, sport kits, advertising-marketing fees and other administration charges.

Revenue is including broadcast rights, stadium tickets sale, title sponsorship for team, other support sponsorships, merchandizing, product promotions.

As rightly said by Mr. Sanjiv Goenka in his interview just after auction results for Lucknow bid that "Firstly, you invest a few crores for passion, you don't invest hundreds of crores for passion”. It is not only passion for sports but cost-revenue model and long-term perspective in mind.

Fantasy sports platform My11Circle has signed a deal to become official title sponsor of Lucknow team and it is estimated INR 23 Crore per year deal as per sources. Next step will be finalizing other support sponsors for the team.

2. Region of team and fanbase

Potential of region or city is important factor in decision of franchisee selection. If region or city is big, there is big fanbase. In case of Lucknow, it is part of Uttar Pradesh state of India which is biggest state by population. So, the fanbase is very high. This region has given lot of good players to India but they did not get their own IPL team earlier. So emotional connect is very high with the team.

3. Home Stadium facilities

During the season, team plays half matches at their home ground and half matches away. Ticket sales and in-stadium advertising of products are revenue streams for team franchise. So, if stadium infrastructure is modern with huge capacity, it is beneficial to franchisee. In case of Lucknow team, their official home stadium will be ‘Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium’ in Lucknow. It has seating capacity of 50,000. It is huge stadium.

4. Owner synergy with region or city

Every owner wants synergy or personal connect between his company or himself with region or city for which he wants team. It is important for brand recall, co-branding activities with fanbase. It is also important that fans connect well with franchisee brand.

For RPSG group for Lucknow franchise, there is lot of synergies between RPSG group and Uttar Pradesh. RPSG group company Noida Power Company Limited is doing power distribution in Greater Noida region. They have Spencer’s retail stores in various cities of Uttar Pradesh. This gives lot of synergy between RPSG group businesses and Uttar Pradesh region.

IPL 2022 Lucknow team draft possibility

IPL 2022 teams available purse for mega auction

Wednesday, December 8, 2021

What does the captain do during the bidding or auction of his team in IPL?

Captain is the main person for any team and his role is pivotal for the team. This is true for all team related sport events in the world.

IPL (Indian Premiere League) has format of mini auction, mega auction, player transfer & trading. For mini auction or player transfer & trading, captain has role to play to strengthen his team along with coaching and analysis staff.

During mega auction, many teams are going into auction without their decided captain. In IPL 2022, old teams like Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings, Royal Challengers Bangalore are going into mega auction without deciding their captain. The reasons for going into mega auction without captain are new team formation, player’s decision of not retained in team. So, in this case, role of coaching and analysis staff will be increased.

New teams of Gujarat and Lucknow have draft process before auction for finalizing their three players each. So, they will surely decide captain during draft process and will go into mega auction with their captains.

Before bid, captain will be involved into player decisions with coaching and analysis staff. Captain is instrumental in deciding his own team during bid process. He decides for alternative players and target price at which he wants to buy particular player. Captain is the person who will implement all strategy, tactics on the field and he will take on field decisions based on his available resources. So, if captain is involved before bid or auction stage for team selection, it will be most beneficial for any team.

These captains keep their core of team intact throughout seasons. Good examples of leaders in IPL are MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma who keep their main core team with changes of 2-3 playing eleven slots.

IPL 2022 Retention – Most Valuable Retentions

All eight franchisees have finalized their retention based on long term player value, captainship, availability of playing in 2022 season, injury & fitness. Four franchisees retained their full quota of players. These franchisees are having good talents in their squad so it was tough decision for them to retain four out of big pool of good players. Three franchisees retained their three players and One franchisee retained two players.

Big stars like MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Rishabh Pant are almost same price compared to 2021. In fact, Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have reduced fee compared to 2021. Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant are at same price level.

There are some surprises in the auction mainly with Royal Challengers Bangalore by retaining only three players even though they have good list of players. They did not retain Harshal Patel who was purple cap holder in 2021 and has very good T20 International debut.  Also, Shubman Gill and Shikhar Dhawan are not retained by their respective franchisees. Kolkata Knight Riders retained V. Iyer in place of Shubman Gill who was consistent with them in opening. V. Iyer can bowl but he did not bowl in IPL 2021.

Following are most valuable retention by franchisees.

Sunil Narine (Kolkata Knight Riders)

Sunil Narine is retained with INR 6 Cr and it is very less compared to last season (INR 12.5 Cr). He is all-rounder and can bat at opening and as finisher. He can bowl in power play and in middle overs. If he is not retained then there will be tough competition among franchisees. This is best valuable retention.

Glenn Maxwell (Royal Challengers Bangalore)

Glenn Maxwell is retained with INR 11 Cr and it is less compared to last season (INR 14.25 Cr). He is all-rounder and he will have great role to play with Royal Challengers Bangalore in absence of AB de Villiers. This is best retention for RCB.

Kieron Pollard (Mumbai Indians)

Kieron Pollard is retained with INR 6 Cr. which is almost same as compared to last season (INR 5.4 Cr). He is with Mumbai Indians since long. He is playing various role for Mumbai Indians like finisher, bowler and leader when Rohit Sharma is not playing.

Mumbai Indians Dilemma – Player Retention from Spotted Talents

Moeen Ali (Chennai Super Kings)

Moeen Ali is retained with INR 8 Cr which is almost same as compared to last season (INR 7 Cr). In last season, he gave flexibility to CSK line up by going at number four for batting. He is good spinner who can bowl in power play and in middle overs.

Looking at team retention performance, Royal Challengers Bangalore has done great job by keeping total price of retained players at same level of INR 33 Cr compared to last price to these retained players. If they have retained one more player like Devdutt Padikkal or Harshal Patel or Yuzvendra Chahal, it would be best retention for them.

All other franchisees have retained their players at total higher price compared to last season.

Mumbai Indians Dilemma – Player Retention from Spotted Talents

There will be mega auction for Indian Premiere League in 2022 and rules are already set by governing council. There are two new teams from 2022 season. This has increased competition and all franchisees need to take tough decisions on player selection.

Mumbai Indians team is known for their best spotted talents. They nurture talents and make players big in cricket world. Famous examples are Hardik Pandya, Ishan Kishan, Krunal Pandya and many other young talents. They invested heavily in this new talent pool. Rules of this year Indian Premiere League make it very difficult for Mumbai Indians to consider options for retention.

Rohit Sharma will lead Mumbai Indians team and he is most successful captain in Indian Premiere League. He is very experienced batsman at opening.

Jasprit Bumrah will be main lead bowler who has very good record at international level. He is main bowler for India cricket team. He will be in retention list.

Kieron Pollard will be third retained player. He is all rounder and he is experienced at 5 and 6 number. He will be in playing 11 always. In absence of Rohit Sharma, he is handling captaincy. He is match winner player. Even though his recent performance is not up to the mark but still he will be retained.

Fourth option for retention will be highly difficult for Mumbai Indians where their dilemma starts. They need to pick from their spotted talent pool but the choice is only one. From Ishan Kashan, Hardik Pandya and Suryakumar Yadav; they need to pick only one. These three players are also in radar for other teams and specially for newly created teams.

Hear comes flexibility of team and different roles a player can play. Suryakumar Yadav is batsman playing at 3 and 4 number. Hardik Pandya is all rounder and handy at 5 and 6 number with Pollard. He can be fifth bowler. However, his current form is not up to the mark with bowling. Ishan Kishan is batsman with flexibility of playing at opening or at 3 and 4 number. He can act as wicket keeper. Mumbai Indians will release Quinton De Kock. In earlier formats of Indian Premiere League, both wicket keepers were there in playing 11. This reduces chance of adding extra bowler or all rounder in team. Ishan Kishan can give this flexibility in the team. So, he will be sure choice for retention.

Retained Players Possibility – Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Kieron Pollard, Ishan Kishan
